How to Treat Your Moving Crew
We occasionally hear from consumers who have questions about how to best interact with a moving crew at either end of a relocation. To offer some guidance, we have developed the following top to help make sure the van driver and other crew members can perform safely, efficiently and comfortably.
- Provide the essentials. Consider the crew’s needs and comfort: offer access to drinking water, designate a bathroom for their use, and keep hand sanitizer available. Have disposable paper towels handy, to save your linens and other items from the possibility of moving-related grime. And you might want to identify an outside area where smoking would be permitted.
- Meet and greet. Take time to meet your crewmembers and make them feel welcome. Always have one responsible adult available throughout the move to answer questions, and make sure they know which room you’re calling a den and which one is a "family room," etc.
- Keep kids and pets busy. Make arrangements to keep small children and pets occupied so they don’t get in the way. If possible, have them stay with friends or relatives at the time of the move.
- Provide feedback. If you’re pleased with your crew, send a nice letter to the carrier as all drivers are ranked by quality scores and comments by customers. As with all hardworking front-line customer service professionals, tips, while not expected, are a great way to show your appreciation for a job well done.

Top Ten Ways to Prepare for a Smooth Move
Ask questions. If you do not understand something, ask. The moving business is complex and has its own language. If you aren’t satisfied with the answers to your questions or if the carrier hesitates when you ask for clarification, talk to another carrier.
Plan an Off-Peak Season Move (when possible). June to September is the high season. If you can avoid moving during those months, you will likely receive better service. If you must move during the high season, move mid-month, mid-week, and avoid the end of the month.
Be Reachable by Phone. Make sure the carrier is able to reach you by phone during your move. This can save time and storage costs if the driver is ready to deliver and you ready to receive the shipment. Be sure to have the driver’s full name, id and truck number to allow for fast and easy communication.
Take Valuables with You. Valuables, such as cash, coins, jewelry, photographs, and important papers should be taken with you or sent ahead. Be sure to use a traceable service, such as FedEx and United Parcel Service.
Segregate Personal Travel Items. The items traveling with you, such as clothes and papers, should be put in one place or in the vehicle you are taking with you. Avoid having those items loaded on the truck and having to find them later.

When is best time of the year or month to move?
Summer time is the busiest time of the year for movers. In addition, the beginning and end of each month are traditionally busier than mid-month, regardless of the season. If you are planning to move during one of these times, plan well in advance so your mover's schedule can accommodate your requirements.
If you have the flexibility, try not to move during the summer months or at the end of the month. Most movers charge higher rates for moves made during these time periods. Try to move during the middle of the month. (The first and last days of each month are always a mover's busiest times.)

Tips for Moving
In the interest of saving you money, this list of moving tips has proven extremely helpful in reducing the amount of time and frustration spent on moving day:
- Whenever possible, move your own pictures, plants, table lamps and lamp shades, computers and stereo components.
- Unhook appliances, wind up electrical cords and secure hoses.
- Unhook headboards and footboards on beds and put the hardware in a place where you can find it.
- Take mirrors off the backs of chests and dressers.
- Pack boxes properly; make sure boxes have tops that are sealed. Remember, we are not responsible for the contents of cartons that we don't pack.
- Clean out desks, nightstands, and dressers if they are very heavy or delicate. If they come up or down stairs with turns in them, clean out at least some of the drawers. These items frequently get turned on their sides in transport.
- Secure all small and "losable" items such as jewelry, coins, papers, etc. Put your keys, remote controls and checkbook where you can find them.
- In general, be prepared. Strive for a situation where the movers walk in, pick up a piece and walk out. The less time they spend using their tools, the faster the move will go. The more you do to organize your move, the less it will cost, and the easier it will be to get settled in your new home.
- To help ensure the safe relocation of your Plasma television the unit must be serviced and removed by a third party provider prior to being packed. All Plasma televisions must be crated in a specially designed shipping case or the original manufacturer's carton by a third party provider prior to being packed. Please note that a waiver for damage must be signed for Plasma televisions being relocated.
Deducting Moving Expenses from Your Federal Taxes
Did you know that in many cases, your moving expenses are deductable from your federal income taxes? If you moved due to a change in your job or business location, or because you started a new job or business, you may be able to deduct your "reasonable" moving expenses.
