The Do's and Don'ts of Planning Your Next Move

Moving can be a lot. You have to decide if you’re moving yourself or hiring movers, what you’re taking to your new home and more. It can be hard deciding the next course of action. To make it a little easier, Baymeadows Movers has compiled a quintessential task list for moving. Here are the do’s and don’ts of planning your next move.

Don’t Pack Last Minute

If you know you’re moving in a month, don’t wait till the day before to start packing. You won’t realize how much stuff you’ve accumulated until it is too late. Give yourself some breathing room and start packing early. To make the task easier, try doing one room per day. By separating each room into its own task, your stress levels will decrease and you won’t feel overwhelmed.

Do Give Yourself Time

You should give yourself at least a few weeks in advance to start planning your move. You need time to coordinate with movers, pick up moving supplies, call utility companies and more. If you wait till the last minute, you’ll find yourself in a heap of trouble as you simply won’t have time to accomplish all of your moving tasks. By spacing out your responsibilities, you won’t be stressing on moving day.

Don’t Forget to Have an Essentials Bag

By the time you’re settled in your new home, you’ll be exhausted and may want to go straight to bed without unpacking. Unfortunately, if your pajamas and bathroom toiletries are sequestered away in boxes, you’ll have to go searching for them. To prevent this, be sure to pack an essentials bag. This includes items like a change of clothes, a toothbrush, etc. That way you don’t have to worry about unpacking straight away, as you’ll have everything you need for the next few days.

Do Purge As You Move

Nothing sucks more than paying to move items that you don’t need anymore. That’s why you should purge as you move. While packing, get rid of anything you don’t use often or are unlikely to use again. Also, if your furniture won’t fit in your new home, get rid of it as well. You can either throw the unwanted items away or arrange to donate them to charities. The result is a smaller amount of objects to transport.

Don’t Wait to Book

If you do decide to hire professional movers, you need to book well in advance. You can’t just call a day ahead expecting movers to have free time to help. You need to meet with them before so they can provide an estimate on your items. Also, if a significant change with your move occurs, they need to be informed beforehand to update the estimate. Communication is crucial in this circumstance. We recommend booking movers at least 4-6 weeks in advance.

Do Label Your Boxes

You’ll have a lot of boxes to go through on moving day. To prevent extra hassle, label your boxes as you pack. Write down which room each box will go in. You won’t have to frantically search for a particular item, as you’ll know where everything is. An extra step would be to assign different colored stickers to each room. That way, if you can’t see the writing on the box, you will still know what room to put it in.

Don’t Rely on Price

You should never hire movers based on the lowest price. Instead, meet with potential companies at your home so they can give you a proper quote. You can also look at their reviews, talk to friends for recommendations and check if they’re insured. These aspects should influence your decision-making, rather than hiring based on price.
